Nomad's Compostit® compostable mailers are made from a plant-based, biodegradable resin blend (typically PBAT combined with a plant-starch-derived polymer such as PLA), engineered to break down fully in composting conditions rather than persist as conventional plastic.
PBAT (polybutylene adipate terephthalate) is a biodegradable synthetic polyester that gives compostable films flexibility and strength similar to conventional plastic. PLA (polylactic acid) is a bioplastic derived from fermented plant starches (commonly corn, though also sugarcane or cassava), which adds rigidity and helps the blend break down more readily in composting conditions.
Mailers typically blend the two since PBAT alone is soft and stretchy, while PLA alone is brittle. Together, they behave more like standard plastic film.
They are independently certified by the Australasian Bioplastics Association: Home Compostable certified to AS 5810 (ABAP 20033) and Commercially Compostable certified to AS 4736 (ABAP 10096) — meaning they're verified to break down safely in both a home compost bin and a commercial composting facility, with no toxic residue to soil, plants, or earthworms and no PFAS or heavy metals above allowable limits.
